Common IRC Commands
Common Commands
There are many IRC user commands and a comprehensive list can be found on Wikipedia's List of Internet Relay Chat commands.Some of the more common commands you will use are as follows:
/join
The join is a command to join a channelExample: /join #ablenet
/me
The me is an action message.Example: /me pokes Anthony in the eye
/msg
Type /msg nickname (message) to start a private chat.Example: /msg Anthony wanna cyber?
/nick
nick command changes your nicknameExample: /nick new_nick
/notice
A notice is used to send a short message to another person without opening up a private window.Example: /notice Anthony Waaazzupp??
/query
Similar to the /msg, except it forces a window to pop open.Type /query Anthony Waaazzupp??
/quit
Type /quit to leave IRC altogether. This disconnects your client from the server.Example: /quit Good Bye cruel world!
/ignore
Ignore might be very usefull if someone is annoying youBy typing /ignore nickname, you will not receive anymore messages from that person. (The command might differ depending on your client)
Example: /ignore meredith
/whois
Type /whois nickname to see a bit more information about another user.Example: /whois Anthony
