l2extreme.com shut down for piracy
Fri, 17 Nov 2006 at 07:37 AM
Word on the internet has it that www.l2extreme.com has been confiscated and shut down by the United States Federal Government on Friday as part of their crackdown on internet piracy.
The site, l2extreme, is a popular online gaming location for the lineage players. NCSoft currently allows individuals to download the Client Software for free to connect to their 'pay to play' MMORPG. Sites, such as l2extreme, have copies of the server code and have long allowed users to play on their unofficial lineage servers for "free"; inapparent direct conflict of interests with Lineage II Online/NCSoft.
How they obtained the server software on a regular schedule is unknown and the ramifications of this move are currently unknown to the general public and the futures of this site and their respective communities are as of yet unknown.

Router Exploit Discovered around DCC Packets
Sat, 25 Mar 2006 at 02:41 PM
As of late a new variation of a familiar exploit has been making the rounds based on DCC protocol and consumer gateway/router traffic management.
If you are being disconnected suddenly with a 'connection reset by peer' message, try connecting to AbleNET on port 6668 (/server irc.ablenet.org 6668) and this will act as a serviceable work around to the problem until the router manufacturers resolve the issue. The cause is most likely the exploit being used to disconnect users from irc by sending them malformed DCC packets that are not ignored by your commercial router/gateway such as linksys, d-link and netgear brands.
More details to come as they are released. In the meantime please see the AbleNET Forums for more information and feedback.
